The function of the sway bar (or anti-sway bar) is to stabilize the body of your Jeep in relation to the suspension. It attaches to both chassis rails and is connected to the axle housing using the sway bar links. The spring steel construction allows it to function like a torsion bar to resist body roll during cornering. For street driving, the sway bar is vital to proper handling and control and operates virtually transparent to the driver for safety.

Once off-road, however, the opposite is true. The sway counteracts the ability of the suspension to function independently of the chassis. On uneven terrain this will prevent the tires from maintaining contact with the ground. With no traction, no forward progress can be made.
