Can You Stack a Leveling Kit on Top of a Suspension Lift Kit?
If you are looking for just a little more clearance but already have a lift kit, you may be wondering if you can stack a leveling kit on top of a suspension lift kit. This is a question we get asked and to be honest - it depends.
Legality of Stacking Lift Kit Components
The first consideration is the legality of stacking in your state. Different states have different laws as it relates to stacking spacers, blocks, and other components. For example, on straight axle vehicles with front leaf springs, you can add front shackles for a little more height but adding front lift blocks would be illegal (in most states).
Technical Considerations
Another issue to consider is the technical challenges that can be created by adding more lift. Stacking lift kits can potentially create problems with the following:
- Driveshaft length
- CV axle angles
- Brake lines
- Steering system issues
- Voiding the warranty on your lift kit
Each of these suspension components are designed with specific angles and tolerances in mind. Stacking lifts can potentially lead to strain on these components, can cause premature wear or (worst case) system failure and loss of control.
How Much Lift Do You Really Need?
If just a small adjustment is needed for that extra bit of clearance, it can be hard to find parts that will provide 1” or less of lift. Many suspension lift kits can tolerate a minor tweak for a little more lift. For example, let’s say you have a truck with an IFS front with torsion bars sitting on a 6" suspension lift. You notice your tires rubbing on the lower valance corners and just need a little more clearance. In this case, cranking the torsion bars up less than an inch will not have a significant negative effect on your suspension kit components angles. However, if you cranked them 2-3", or used aftermarket keys, you can expect your ride to suffer tremendously. And get ready to buy new ball joints as that extra 2-3” will cause premature wear on both the ball joints and CV axles.
Should You Do It?
We say no – we do not recommend stacking a leveling kit on top of a suspension kit. The only exception would be if the lift kit manufacturer gives you the go-ahead (spoiler alert – they probably won’t). If you decide to go ahead and do it anyway, be sure to regularly check your suspension. Or consider some wheel spacers or a body lift instead?
